Educating Linguistically Diverse Children

Halfway There!!

Hourglass

I feel like the class has gotten off to a slow start.  However, there are a few things that I have enjoyed doing, and there are things that I can look forward to.  I really enjoyed writing my I Am Poem.  At first I was not too sure about writing my poem, because I have never been good at poetry.  It was actually pretty easy once I got started.  It was fun remembering where I came from and where I am today.  I started where I was born, who my parents are, things I like to do, a little about my husband, how many kids I have, and several other little things about my life.  I would love to do this activity with my students some day!  I think it is a great way for teachers to get to know their students and for them to get to know each other.  I'm sure I will have a variety of students from different cultures, so I will be excited to know a little about where they come from.  Something that I have discovered is that I like reading the text book.  Some of the chapters are a little boring, but for the most part I like reading the different ways to teach English to students of other cultures.  I like the way the chapters start off by giving different scenarios and then discussing them in detail.
I think my favorite thing we have been able to do so far is have Vicki Bruno visit our classroom.  Sign lanuage has always fasinated me and I wish I had taken the time to learn it a long time ago, but I still hope to learn more about the language in the future.  I have enjoyed learning some of the basics she has taught us and I really like the handouts she gives us too.  I'm excited to find out a sign name for myself, I just think that is really cool!  The information she is bringing to our classroom can definitely be helpful in the future, every little bit of information is great.  I had no idea how many kids, or even just people in general, have experienced a hearing loss of some sort.  Whether it be the sensory neural, the conductive, or a combination of the both of them.  The tape she had us listen to was very interesting, aggrivating, but interesting.  It definitely opened my eyes and I will do whatever I can to accomodate my students according to their needs.  I look forward to her visiting our classroom in the future.  I know we have not started working with Charolette Bradshaws classroom, but it is something I can look forward to as well.  I think it will be a good experience for me and I have been discovering that the more time I spend in the actual classroom the more I am learning.  It's like welcome to the real world of teaching!
