Materials/ Resources: Numerous books, worksheets, construction paper (red, white, blue), star stickers, glue, crayons, CDs, CD player, and pictures of State and National symbols.

Focus

Prior Knowledge:  The students will need to be familiar with the fact that they live in New Mexico

Prerequisite Skills:  The students will need to have good listening, verbal, and observation skills.

Practice/Assess

Guided Practice:

Monday- I will introduce the state of New Mexico reading a part out of the book Don’t Know Much About The 50 States by Kenneth C. Davis.  I will explain how our state got its name and a little history about the adobe buildings in the area.  I will briefly tell them the states nickname, statehood, capitol, flower, and bird.  Then as a class we will look at a map of the United States and find New Mexico and the Farmington and Aztec area, and Santa Fe our state Capitol.

Tuesday-I will be reading a book about the United States Flag aloud.  Then I will show them a picture of the State Flag and the United States Flag and give them a little history about the two flags, and talk about the colors of each flag.

Wednesday-I will provide the music of the State song and National Anthem and we will listen to each song and I will go through what some of the words mean so that the students will understand how important these songs are to us.

Thursday-I will read informational books about the state and United States flower and bird.  Then I will talk to them about other state and United States symbols like the state and United States tree, the state mammal, reptile, and fish.  Show them pictures of these symbols.  I will provide pictures for the students to color.

Friday-We will watch a video about New Mexico and a Video about United States.  Then I will read the book America Is… By Louise Borden

Assessment:

Monday- I will have the students draw about one or two things they learned about today, and I will check to see if they knew where Farmington and Aztec was located on their picture of New Mexico along with the state capitol.

Tuesday-I will give a short quiz about the colors of each flag and what they look like.

Wednesday-They will be assessed by their participation in learning and singing the State Song and the National Anthem.

Thursday-Students will be assessed by their participation in the class discussion, and I will put them into groups and have they will need to come up with two stars about what they learned and a question.

Friday-I will have the students do a plus and delta chart about the films, but I think we will discuss their likes and dislikes aloud as a class.  Then we will talk about the book, and I will have them tell me what they liked, disliked, or did not understand.

Closure

Wrap Up:  I will ask students to take all the worksheets they colored or received this week and create an informational book to share with the class and take home to show their parents what they learned about History this week.

Independent Practice:

Monday-I will provide the students with a worksheet with our state on it to color, and they will have to label where they live and the state capitol.

Tuesday-The students will color a picture of the State Flag and they will be creating the United States Flag out of construction paper and stickers of stars.

Wednesday-I will hand out the words to the State song and National Anthem.  Then as a class we sing the songs for fun and I will answer questions.

Thursday-Students will need to color the pictures of the State and National symbols, and we will have a class discussion about the books I read.

Friday-Students will watch videos and listen to a book about America.
